Habib calls for united efforts against dengue, drugs

State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib on Saturday called on political leaders, the administration and people from all walks of life to work together to strengthen cleanliness drives to prevent dengue and build a drug-free society.

"It would not be possible to tackle the two major crises - dengue and drugs - without social awareness and collective initiatives," he said.

The state minister made the call while addressing the "Dengue Prevention Campaign-2026" programme as the chief guest at the South Goran Playground in Khilgaon, said a press release.

He said the present government and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party are working to build "a dream Bangladesh" for the next generation, and activities are continuing in the fields of education, health, sports and various social sectors.

Mentioning that the government is working to bring citizens under the Family Card programme, Habib said at the same time, the highest allocations are being provided to the health, education and social welfare sectors. Referring to the presence of people from different walks of life at the programme, the Dhaka-9 constituency lawmaker said it would be possible to develop the Dhaka-9 constituency in a better way if political and non-political organisations, students and social workers come forward together.

He praised the activities of Somonnito Sachetan Samaj, saying people must stand by good deeds and collectively resist all forms of social wrongdoing.

Referring to drugs, Habibur Rashid Habib said drugs have destroyed society and if this menace cannot be prevented, it will be difficult to build the Bangladesh of tomorrow.

Addressing political leaders and activists, he said if anyone is directly or indirectly involved in extortion or drugs, they must refrain from such activities. Otherwise, they will face political exclusion and legal action, and there will be no opportunity to protect them, he added.

He said a Bangladesh must be built where everyone feels a sense of ownership of the country and every citizen enjoys equal dignity. It is not enough to seek election alone, rather leaders must stand by the people and remain involved in social activities, he said. On dengue prevention, the state minister said dengue can be prevented through cleanliness and public awareness. Calling for the continuation of the cleanliness drive for the next 30 days, he expressed hope that a dengue-free environment would be created through the initiative of Somonnito Sachetan Samaj.

He also called on the administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation and the concerned officials to cooperate in implementing the initiative. At the same time, he urged political leaders to take part in the cleanliness campaign.

Habibur Rashid Habib said he wants to take the Dhaka-9 constituency forward with accountability as a brother, neighbour and servant of the people. He also expressed his determination to build a better Dhaka-9 by involving people from all walks of life in its wards.
