'Vehicle speed control to make roads safer for pedestrians'
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md. Safiqul Islam Khan on Saturday said roads would become much safer for pedestrians if planned road designs and effective vehicle speed control measures are implemented.
He made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a road safety training workshop as the chief guest at the DNCC auditorium.
The workshop was organised by the DNCC and the World Resources Institute (WRI), said a press release.
The administrator said coordinated measures are being taken to ensure road safety. Through planned road design, it is possible to ensure safe pedestrian crossings and effectively control excessive vehicle speed by installing raised crossings before traffic signals and zebra crossings, along with speed breakers, he said.
He said the Prime Minister is highly positive about road safety and the integrated development of the city.
The Prime Minister will be informed about the ongoing activities in Dhaka under the DNCC and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).
The day-long training workshop was chaired by BIGRS Bangladesh Coordinator Md Abdul Wadud. DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Syed Rakibul Hasan, and Additional Chief Engineer Khandakar Mahbub Alam attended the programme as special guests.
More than 50 engineers of the DNCC took part in the training. Officials from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) and the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) also participated.
