Low-lying areas of Satkhira city remains submerged after several days of continuous rain.
The highest rainfall of 302 millimeters has been recorded in the district in 48 hours from Thursday (July 9) morning to Saturday (July 11), causing severe waterlogging and widespread disruption to daily life.
For this reason, residents have faced extreme hardship. Low-income people are suffering. Rural roads in the lower areas of Katia, Kamalnagar, Palashpol, Satkhira Government College Mor, Sultanpur, Baddipur Colony, Madhumalya Dangi, Mathpara, and Maaskhola in the municipality have been submerged in water.
Due to knee-deep water in some areas, vehicle movement on the road is being disrupted.
As water is not drained through the drains on the side of the road, water has accumulated in the courtyards, kitchens, and even in the houses of many people.
Adv Fahimul Haque Kislu, a resident of Satkhira Government College area, said, the entire road from College intersection to Maaskhola is under water. It has become difficult to walk. Rickshaws, vans and easy bikes are not able to run properly. This situation happens every year when it rains, but the authorities do not take any action for a long time.
College teacher Manik Chandra Das said, "Even with a little rain, water accumulates on the road, making it impossible to pass through. We are in trouble because the municipal council has been digging drains for a long time, but they have not finished the work. Due to the continuous rain of the last two days, water has accumulated from the courtyard of the house to the kitchen.
This may increase the mosquito infestation."
He also said that the drainage system of Satkhira municipality has been inadequate for a long time. Many drains have been filled, and the capacity of the drains is low in some places. As a result, waterlogging occurs even with a little rain, and the situation becomes dire during continuous rain.
Satkhira District Meteorological Office observer Zulfikar Ali Ripon said that 302 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in the district in the last 48 hours. This is the highest rainfall in a single day this season. There is a possibility of light rain in addition to the sky being cloudy for several days now.
Satkhira Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UAO) Arnob Dutta said, "Road cleaning work is underway in various places in the district along with re-excavation of canals and rivers. I am optimistic that the waterlogging in the city will be largely eliminated this year."
