Illegal fishing nets seized in Saturia

A large quantity of illegal China Duari nets were seized from Charpara Chowk and Kushtia Chowk areas of Saturia upazila in Manikganj during drives on Wednesday. 

The drives were conducted to protect fisheries resources and implement the Fisheries Conservation Act.

Later, these banned nets were burned and destroyed in public at the Upazila Parishad premises.

According to the Upazila Fisheries Office, a total of 7 China Duari nets were seized during the drives conducted by the Fisheries Office, with a combined length of about 490 meters. The estimated market value of the seized nets is about Tk. 38,500.

Saturia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kazi Mohammad Anik Islam, Upazila Fisheries Officer Benazir Farzin and Upazila Youth Development Officer Kamrul Hasan were present during the destruction of the nets.  Other officials and employees of the Upazila Fisheries Department were also present at the time.  Saturia Upazila Fisheries Officer Benazir Farzin said, "The administration's strict surveillance and mobile court operations will be regularly disrupted to stop the use of banned nets to protect native fish species and aquatic biodiversity."
