LGED implements wide-ranging infrastructural dev projects in Cumilla

The Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has implemented an extensive array of infrastructural development projects across Cumilla city, significantly contributing to the socio-economic development of the district. According to the sources, as a result of the ongoing development activities in various upazilas of the district, there have been visible changes in the communication system. In areas where people once faced extreme hardship in moving during the monsoon season, sustainable roads and bridges have now been built. As a result, besides making the transportation of agricultural products easier, there has also been a new momentum in business and trade.

LGED Cumilla sources said that under various development projects of the government, work is underway to develop rural roads in the district, build market infrastructure, modernize drainage systems and increase the capacity of local government institutions. Regular monitoring and technical supervision are being carried out to ensure the quality of the implementation of development projects.

It has been alleged that during the past fascist period and due to the inefficiency of several previous executive engineers, various projects were stalled and various questions arose about infrastructural development. Due to lack of accountability, extreme apathy was created among a section of officials and employees. Even various contracting organizations expressed their unwillingness to work due to various irregularities and corruption.  However, after breaking that deadlock, a radical change has made at LGED, Cumilla after the current Executive Engineer, Md. Mofiz Uddin (Bablu) took the charge. Immediately after taking charge, Md. Mofiz Uddin announced a 'zero tolerance' policy against corruption and irregularities.

He recently recommended the transfer of 1 Upazila Engineer to another place and departmental arrangements on charges of negligence and irregularities. Despite taking responsibility at a time of global crisis and the increase in the price of construction materials, he has successfully completed the allocation of funds for all projects for the month of June/2026 by providing maximum support in the implementation of the district's work.  Known as a skilled, smart and uncompromising engineer, this executive engineer has now regained unprecedented momentum in all the district's work due to his strict monitoring.

In addition to various developmental works, to keep the office staff active,  tree (medicinal, fruit and forest) saplings were distributed to all officers and employees at the district and upazila levels recently in continuation of the "Fruit Festival" and LGED, Cumilla is also giving special importance to combating the adverse effects of climate change. Taking into account the issue of excessive rainfall and waterlogging, initiatives have been taken to construct sustainable drainage systems and build climate-tolerant infrastructure in various areas. The concerned officials say that these projects are being implemented to ensure the benefits of the people in the long term.

Recently, several high-level delegations of the Ministry and LGED visited the development work of various projects at the field level. They expressed deep satisfaction at the high quality of the work and the current progress.

Field research shows that due to various projects implemented by LGED, people in remote areas of the district are now easily getting education, healthcare and market facilities. This is not only strengthening the rural economy, but also increasing employment opportunities.

Mr. Mohammad Abdus Shaker, a responsible officer of LGED Cumilla, Senior Assistant Engineer, said, "Our main goal is to build sustainable and quality infrastructure by ensuring proper use of government funds. We are working with utmost sincerity to meet the expectations of the people."

According to local public representatives and conscious circles, LGED's contribution to the development of Cumilla's communication infrastructure is very important. Especially, the expansion of the rural road network has opened new possibilities for agriculture and small businesses.

Development analysts believe that if the ongoing projects are completed on time, Cumilla's infrastructural development will accelerate further. At the same time, a new momentum will be created in the economic activities of the district, which will play an important role in the formation of a smart and sustainable Cumilla.
