Administrators' sincerity accelerates dengue prevention efforts: Shahe Alam
State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam on Tuesday said the sincerity and coordinated efforts of city corporation administrators have given new momentum to dengue prevention activities. He said the appointment of administrators to the city corporations under the Prime Minister's visionary leadership has revitalized field-level operations and enhanced the effectiveness of anti-dengue campaigns.
The state minister made the remarks while chairing a meeting of the task force on the prevention of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases, held virtually from the conference room of the Local Government Division at the Secretariat, reports BSS.
He said prevention remains the most effective way to combat dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases, emphasizing that the highest priority should be given to destroying Aedes mosquito breeding sites and further strengthening cleanliness drives. Praising the dedication, sincerity and hard work of the administrators, he called for greater participation of voluntary organizations, educational institutions and local communities in awareness campaigns alongside government initiatives. Shahe Alam said sanitation workers employed by the city corporations must play a more responsible and proactive role in maintaining urban cleanliness. At the same time, he urged citizens to remain vigilant in keeping their homes, educational institutions, construction sites and surrounding environments clean.
He placed particular emphasis on conducting regular inspections of under-construction buildings and strengthening awareness programmes in educational institutions.
Drawing on field-level experience, the State Minister also provided necessary directives to make dengue prevention activities more coordinated and effective.
Recently, the LGD formed the task force to implement the decisions of the national committee on the prevention of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases at the field level, ensure effective coordination among relevant agencies, and oversee overall prevention activities.
In line with the committee's decisions, nationwide cleanliness campaigns, public awareness programmes and special drives to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds are being implemented.
As part of these efforts, regular drives are being conducted across different areas of the capital, he said. If Aedes mosquito larvae are found at under-construction buildings or other potential breeding sites, legal action is being taken through mobile courts, he said.
Mymensingh City Corporation administrator Rukunuzzaman Rokon, Rangpur City Corporation administrator Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury, and Rajshahi City Corporation administrator Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Riton joined the meeting in person.
Administrators of the Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal, Sylhet, Cumilla, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Bogura city corporations, along with chief executive officers, chief health officers and other relevant officials from various city corporations, joined the meeting virtually.
Md. Robiul Islam, Joint Secretary of the Urban Development Wing of the Local Government Division, and Abul Khayer Mohammad Hafizullah Khan, Project Director of the Improvement of Urban Public Health Preventive Services project.
