12 BAU teachers avoid return after completing higher education abroad
A total of 120 teachers from different departments of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) are currently staying abroad on academic leave for higher education and research. Of them, 12 teachers have not joined the university even after the scheduled leave period has ended.
The university's current dues to them are about 4 crore 7 lakh 75 thousand 801 taka.
According to the university's establishment branch, every teacher has to sign a bond before going abroad on academic leave. According to that bond, joining the university after the leave period is mandatory. If you do not join within the stipulated time, there is a provision to take administrative and legal action according to the bond, including collecting compensation. University sources said that currently 120 teachers from different departments are on academic leave. Some of them are staying abroad without joining the university after the leave period. In addition, some have voluntarily resigned from their jobs and some have been removed from their jobs as per the syndicate's decision. Necessary activities are underway to recover the money owed from them.
According to the information of the establishment branch, initiatives have been taken to recover compensation from 12 teachers who did not return to the country even after the stipulated time. Cases are pending in court against some of them, and summonses have been sent to some.
Among the teachers who received notices, there are 2 teachers from the Faculty of Agriculture, 1 from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, 3 from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, 1 from the Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology, and 5 from the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and Technology.
According to the university, the total compensation claim from these teachers is 4 crore 51 lakh 67 thousand 175 taka, of which, an amount of 43 lakh 91 thousand 374 taka has been deposited. Currently, the university has a recoverable arrears of 4 crore 7 lakh 75 thousand 801 taka.
Additional Registrar of the establishment branch of the university Dr. Md. Nazmul Haque said, a teacher is given a maximum of five years of academic leave for doing PhD and a maximum of two years for post-doctoral research. When the leave period ends, a letter is first sent to join the workplace within a month.
Later, another 15 days are given. If anyone does not join even then, a notice of compensation for the unfulfilled bond is given and necessary legal action is taken.
BAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan said, "Teachers go on academic leave after signing the bond. It is mandatory for them to return after the specified time. Many take exemption from their jobs and pay the university dues.
But if someone violates the conditions and stays abroad, action is taken according to the university rules. Cases have already been filed against some of them. No one will be exempted outside the rules."
