There has been an alarming rise in road accidents, significantly highway accidents, in Bangladesh over the past few years. Every year, thousands of people are dying from highway accident, a father is losing child, and a child is losing father or mother. The continuous torment of the death creates a storm in everyday lives. Such stories have been captured by photographer Noor Alam which are currently being displayed in Edward M Kennedy Center at Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
This weeklong photography exhibition by photographer Noor Alam, titled 'Tears on Highways', features 25 photographs and collages that accentuate the traumatic experiences of people who have experienced accident or lost someone close. The exhibition also rises a concerning questions about the effectiveness of existing safety measures on highways. The exhibition was inaugurated on the occasion of the National Road Safety Day on October 22. The exhibition is organized by SERAC-Bangladesh, supported by Youth as Agents of Social Change (YASC) and sponsored by EMK center.
In the exhibition, some of the photographs, coupled with descriptive captions, show scenes of accidents that have robbed families of their dear ones as well as caused injuries leaving a lasting impact on the mind and body of the victims.
Besides, Noor Alam has also captured grieving individuals who lost family members in accidents. One of the images shows a man crying alongside with two men over losing family. Another photo shows couple of man carrying a stretcher with a body covered with cloths. One photo shows a destroyed car to depict the horror of an accident. The exhibition, which began on October 21, will remain open for the public until today.
