MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park breaks ground at NSEZ
MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park Limited on Sunday formally broke ground for its new manufacturing facility at the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ) in Mirsarai, Chattogram, marking the official start of construction of a technology-driven and environmentally friendly electrical and electronics manufacturing plant. The project, being developed in collaboration with the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), is expected to strengthen the country's industrialisation efforts, promote domestic investment and expand technology-based manufacturing, said a press release.
MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park Limited, a concern of MEP Group, will establish the factory on around 10 acres of land at the NSEZ with an investment of about Tk 200 crore, entirely from domestic sources.
The facility will manufacture a range of electrical and electronic products, including electric cables, switches and sockets, fans, LED lights and circuit breakers, with the company aiming to expand its presence in both domestic and international markets.
Established in 1974, MEP Group operates several business ventures, including Mohammadi Electric Wire & Multi Products (MEP) Ltd., MEP Fan Ltd., MEP Energy Saving Lamps Industries Ltd., MEP Polymer Industries Ltd., Chaklader Shipping Lines Ltd., MEP Light Industries Ltd., MEP Printing and Packaging Industries and MEP Agro Limited. The group has around 2,000 corporate clients and a distribution network of more than 1,000 outlets across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director Dr Md Jahangir Alam Chaklader said the company was committed to building a world-class, technology-driven and environmentally sustainable manufacturing hub. He expressed hope that the project would not only meet growing domestic demand but also strengthen the global competitiveness of "Made in Bangladesh" electrical products.
Among others, senior BEZA officials, directors of MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park Limited Shakil Alam Chaklader and Fahim Alam Chaklader, representatives of government agencies, financial institutions, business organisations and industrial entrepreneurs attended the event.
BEZA and MEP Hi-Tech Industrial Park Limited signed a land lease agreement on February 18, 2026, for establishing the factory at the NSEZ.
The authority has since revised several provisions of its lease agreements and introduced time-bound implementation plans to accelerate industrial development.
Construction of the project began in April 2026 and is scheduled for completion by December 2028, with commercial production expected to commence in January 2029.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to create around 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. Currently, 17 industrial units are in production at the National Special Economic Zone, while around 20 others are under construction. Spread across a 25-kilometre coastal belt, the NSEZ is being developed as the country's largest planned industrial hub with integrated urban facilities.
