Russia seeks to expand bilateral trade with Bangladesh
Russia has expressed strong interest in expanding government-to-government (G2G) trade with Bangladesh, with a particular focus on agricultural cooperation, fertilizer exports and food security.
The proposal was made on Tuesday during a meeting between a Russian delegation, led by Acting Ambassador (Chargé d'Affaires) Vyacheslav Senturin, and Commerce and Industry Adviser Khandaker Abdul Muktadir at the Secretariat in Dhaka.
During the meeting, Senturin said Russia is keen to supply 280,000 metric tons of urea fertilizer to Bangladesh through JSC FEC Prodintorg for the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC).
He noted that Russia's offer is US$10 per metric ton cheaper than the prices Bangladesh currently pays to other supplier countries.
The Russian delegation also expressed interest in exporting a range of essential food commodities to Bangladesh, including sunflower oil, yellow peas, chickpeas, red lentils and green lentils. It reaffirmed Russia's commitment to supporting Bangladesh in ensuring food security and maintaining stability in the domestic market.
Both sides also discussed strengthening cooperation under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) and JSC FEC Prodintorg for the supply of essential commodities.
Welcoming Russia's proposal, Adviser Muktadir said trade, investment and economic cooperation between the two countries would continue to grow on the basis of mutual interests and shared benefits. The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain regular communication and further deepen bilateral economic partnership. Industry Secretary Abdun Naser Khan and senior officials from both sides were also present at the meeting.
