Minister urges media, public to verify info before sharing
Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, Information Technology, and Science and Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam on Wednesday urged the media and the public to verify information before publishing or sharing news, stating that rumors surrounding Nagad are baseless.
"Efforts are underway to make the Department of Posts more popular and accessible. The rumors being spread about Nagad are completely baseless.
I urge everyone not to be misled by such misinformation," the minister said. "Nagad, as a government-owned institution, enjoys strong public confidence . . . Through the modern software, improved customer service and innovative initiatives, the organisation could become even more competitive and resilient," he said.
He made the remarks while inaugurating Franchise Post Offices at the Dak Bhaban in city's Agargaon area and during a ceremony marking the formal handover of Taka 18.57 crore to the Department of Posts as the government's share of profits generated from Nagad's revenue collection in the 2025-26 fiscal year, BSS reports.
Referring to the franchise post office initiative, Fakir Mahbub said the model has been successfully implemented in many countries around the world for years. Bangladesh is introducing the system to bring the postal service closer to people's doorsteps, he added.
He stressed the need for launching extensive public awareness campaigns so that more entrepreneurs become interested in operating such franchise post offices.
Expressing optimism, the minister said that all post offices across the country would eventually be brought under the franchise model. This, he noted, would expand citizens' access to postal services while creating new business and employment opportunities.
He assured the franchise operators that the Department of Posts would provide all necessary support to address any operational challenges.
Receiving the profit-sharing cheque from Nagad, the minister said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has made significant progress in implementing its electoral commitments within six months of assuming office.
He further announced that more than 9,000 post offices across the country are being transformed into modern service centers to ensure that people in remote areas have easier access to digital and financial services.
Speaking as a special guest, Belkis Jahan Rimi, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division, said increased government revenue is essential for ensuring improved public services.
Following the ceremony, the minister exchanged views with divisional postal agents and assured them that their concerns and operational challenges would be addressed through consultation.
The event was chaired by Md. Motasim Billah, Administrator of BPO-Nagad. Kazi Asadul Islam, Acting Director General of the Department of Posts, attended as a special guest.
