Gofran Palash, Kalapara (Patuakhali): A rare species of yellowfin tuna weighing about 29 kg was caught in fishing nets in the Bay of Bengal adjacent to Kuakata in Patuakhali. Known as 'yellow fin tuna' to local fishermen. This fish is rarely caught. An eager crowd gathered at Messrs. Moni Fish Shop in Kuakata Fisheries Port on Friday (July 31) to see this rare marine fish.

It is learned that the weight of the fish is 28 kg 900 grams (about 29 kg). The fish is sold for a total of 40 thousand 460 taka at a price of 1 thousand 400 taka per kg. Local fish trader Ismail Hossain has bought the fish and is preparing to send it to Dhaka.

Ismail Hossain said, I have never seen such a big yellowfin tuna before. It is a very tasty and valuable fish. It will be sent to Dhaka for sale at a good price.

It is known that the day before yesterday, the fish was caught in the net of Jibon Majhi, a fisherman working on the FB 'Sajeeb' trawler, while fishing in the Payra port area of ​​the Bay of Bengal adjacent to Kuakata.

Jibon Majhi said, such valuable fish are not often caught in our nets. We are very happy to get the fish.

Bakhtiar Rahman said, Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a large-sized, highly migratory pelagic marine fish. It is widely found in the warm and subtropical seas of the world. In Bangladesh, this fish is mainly found in the deep sea of ​​the Bay of Bengal, especially in the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Swath of No Ground.

He also said that there is a huge demand for yellowfin tuna in the international market. It is very valuable as a raw material for fresh, frozen, canned, sashimi and sushi. In addition, the fish is a rich source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin-D, B-complex, selenium, zinc and iron. However, it is important to prevent overexploitation and ensure sustainable fisheries management to preserve this valuable marine resource.

Kalapara Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Apu Saha said that yellowfin tuna is a fast-moving fish living in the deep waters of the tropical and subtropical oceans of the world. An adult fish can be about 2.4 meters long and weigh up to 200 kg. Although it usually lives in the deep sea, it occasionally moves to coastal waters in favorable conditions. This fish is known as one of the fastest marine fish in the world, capable of swimming at speeds of about 75 kilometers per hour.
