Migration Governance Key to National Security: Defense Advisor
In today's global context and evolving geopolitical realities, migration management is directly linked to internal stability, border security, humanitarian protection, and overall national security, said Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. A K M Shamsul Islam, Defense Advisor to the Prime Minister.
He made the remarks on Thursday while delivering the keynote address titled "Migration Governance as a National Security Instrument in Bangladesh" at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Mirpur Cantonment. Upon arrival, Dr. Shamsul Islam was welcomed by BUP Vice-Chancellor Major General Md Mahboob-Ul Alam. Senior military and civilian officials, deans, faculty, and students were present. In his keynote speech, the Defense Advisor noted that security is no longer confined to protecting physical borders. Safe movement, legitimate employment, orderly cross-border processes, and safeguarding citizens' rights abroad are now vital components of national security. Unplanned migration, he warned, creates multidimensional challenges to border management and regional stability. Highlighting the role of remittances in the economy, Dr. Shamsul Islam stressed the need for a skilled workforce, expanded legal migration channels, and robust protection for outbound workers.
He called for effective institutional coordination to combat irregular migration, fraud, and human trafficking networks. He further emphasized strengthening emergency response capabilities for expatriates, noting that a humane, security-conscious migration policy will accelerate economic progress while consolidating national security. The keynote address was followed by an interactive session where BUP students raised questions on migration policy, border management, and regional geopolitics. Concluding the event, the Defense Advisor commended BUP's research and academic contributions to national security awareness.
