Flood damages road in Lalmonirhat, disrupts communication for thousands
Flooding triggered by a rise in water level of the Teesta River has washed away a section of a regional road in Dahagram union of Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat, disrupting communication for thousands of residents.
The flash flood inundated around 10 localities in the union, affecting nearly 3,000 families.
Gushing floodwater damaged a section of the road on Thursday night, allowing water to enter nearby settlements and severing road communication.
Locals said the Teesta water rose by around 2-3 feet from Wednesday evening, flooding several villages of wards 1, 2 and 3 of Dahagram union.
Around 500 acres of Aman paddy fields were submerged by floodwater, but no major damage was reported as the water receded within a few hours, according to the upazila office of the Department of Agricultural Extension.
After the floodwater receded, the connecting road on both sides of the bridge over the Sakwa River in the Srishtiyarpar area of ward 1 was damaged.
A nearly 20-foot section of the paved road from Srishtiyarpar to Angarpota and Patgram was washed away, creating a 10-foot-deep hole, disrupting the movement of about 2,000 families in Dangapara, Mistripara, Pradhanpara, Olerpara and Sakwapara of wards 2 and 3. Children, elderly people and livestock are facing difficulties due to the disruption.
Salam Mia, a resident of ward 3, said, "I came here on Friday morning and found that the road broke down. Movement is impossible unless the road is repaired. There is also a risk of accidents while passing through the damaged section."
Debashish Saha, executive engineer of the Lalmonirhat Roads and Highways Department (RHD), said repair work is underway, and the road will be made usable within a few days.
Patgram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Tanvir Hossain said he contacted the RHD executive engineer after learning about the damage and they assured him of resolving the issue soon.
