UK, Bangladesh Agree to Strengthen Cooperation to Tackle Human Trafficking

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke had a meeting on Sunday with Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Choudhury and State Minister Nurul Haque Nur to discuss bolstering bilateral cooperation on migration management and human rights protection.
During the high-level meeting held at the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment in Dhaka, both sides emphasized the need for deeper collaboration to combat organized migration crime, eliminate human trafficking networks, and ensure safer, transparent pathways for Bangladeshi migrant workers.
High Commissioner Sarah Cooke reaffirmed the United Kingdom's commitment to supporting Bangladesh in enhancing migration governance.
She highlighted that joint efforts against illegal recruitment practices and human smuggling are vital to safeguarding vulnerable migrants from exploitation.
Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury briefed the envoy on ongoing policy measures and technological reforms aimed at protecting the welfare of overseas workers. He stressed that regularized migration channels not only safeguard workers' rights but also strengthen economic ties between both nations. State Minister Nurul Haque Nur underscored the necessity of institutional capacity building, skilled workforce development and strict law enforcement cooperation between law enforcement agencies of both countries to dismantle illicit migration syndicates.
The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to maintain active dialogue and establish coordinated mechanisms to curb human trafficking while supporting ethical recruitment practices.
