Bangladeshi guavas have export potential in US: Christensen
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen on Sunday said Bangladeshi guavas have potential for export to the United States and other international markets, citing the quality of the locally grown fruit.
The ambassador made the remarks while visiting the traditional floating guava market and guava orchards at Bhimruli in Jhalakathi during a tour of the country's southern region.
Christensen said he would discuss the prospects of Bangladeshi guava exports with his government and relevant authorities. He noted that guavas are also cultivated in warm and tropical regions of the United States, with limited production in Florida, Hawaii and California.
Accompanied by his wife Diane Dao, the US envoy toured Bhimruli's floating guava market and several orchards this morning, where he interacted with local growers and orchard owners.
Christensen learned about guava cultivation, production and marketing and expressed appreciation for the quality of the fruit as well as the hard work of local farmers.
The ambassador also expressed delight at Bhimruli's natural beauty and the distinctive character of its traditional floating market. “Visiting the land of scenic waterways by river boat, it feels great to be in Barishal!” Christensen said, sharing his impression of the visit.
Bhimruli's floating guava market is one of the best-known traditional agro-tourism attractions in southern Bangladesh.
During the monsoon season, farmers and traders transport and sell guavas aboard boats along the area's canals and waterways, creating a distinctive floating marketplace that attracts tourists from home and abroad.
Local orchard owners said the US ambassador's visit generated enthusiasm among guava growers in the area. Before touring the guava orchards, Christensen also met devotees at a local ISKCON temple.
