ADB seeks to further strengthen partnership with Bangladesh

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is keen to further strengthen its partnership with Bangladesh, particularly in environmental protection, climate-resilient infrastructure, clean energy and sustainable development. ADB Vice President Yingming Yang for South, Central and West Asia made the remarks during a meeting with Environment, Forests and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo at the latter's Secretariat office on Monday. Yang stressed the need to review the areas of ongoing cooperation and explore opportunities for undertaking new projects and programmes of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo said Bangladesh contributes very little to global climate change but remains among the countries most vulnerable to its adverse impacts.
"The government is prioritising both adaptation and mitigation measures to protect the lives, livelihoods and natural resources of the country," he said, stressing that adequate, accessible and long-term financing from development partners is essential for successfully implementing these initiatives.
The minister called for greater ADB cooperation in environmental conservation, pollution control and climate-resilient development.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of increasing ADB's technical and financial assistance to strengthen the capacity of climate-vulnerable communities and develop disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Both sides expressed optimism that regular communication and closer coordination would help further advance development cooperation between Bangladesh and the ADB. Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Mohammad Navid Shafiullah and senior ADB officials were also present at the meeting.
