Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque secures final bail
Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque has secured six months' bail in an attempted murder case filed with Banani Police Station in Dhaka.
A High Court bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher issued the order on Monday.
With bail granted in all cases against Justice Khairul, there is now no legal obstacle to his release from jail, his lawyer Motahar Hossain Saju said.
Justice Khairul became the country's 19th Chief Justice on Sep 30, 2010, and retired on May 17, 2011.
Under his leadership, the Appellate Division on May 10, 2011 scrapped the 13th constitutional amendment, effectively ending the caretaker government system for elections.
After retirement, Justice Khairul was appointed chairman of the Law Commission on Jul 23, 2013, and was reappointed several times by the government.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in the July mass uprising, he resigned from the Law Commission on Aug 13, 2024.
Nearly a year later, on Jul 24, 2025, Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch arrested him at his Dhanmondi home.
That night, he was shown arrested in the murder case over Jubo Dal activist Abdul Qayyum Ahad's death in Jatrabari and sent to jail, where he has remained since.
Over the past year, he has been shown arrested in nine cases involving killings or attempted killings during the July Uprising, alleged judgment forgery and corruption.
His lawyer says Justice Khairul has secured bail in all nine cases.
