Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Tuesday met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and conveyed the message he carried from Dhaka following three important meetings with Bangladesh's leadership.
Trivedi arrived in New Delhi on Monday after holding a series of meetings in Dhaka, seen as part of ongoing consultations aimed at engaging constructively to advance relations between the two neighbouring countries.
He met Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on Sunday at State Guest House Padma. On Monday, he held separate courtesy meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
During his courtesy meeting with Tarique Rahman, Trivedi conveyed greetings from Modi to the Bangladesh prime minister and expressed India's intention to work with the government and people of Bangladesh in a "positive, constructive and forward-looking" manner.
The bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the India formally began in 1971 with India's recognition of an independent Bangladesh (which was formerly known as East Pakistan) following India's military intervention in support of the Bangladeshi resistance forces in their war of independence against Pakistan.
Although some disputes remain unresolved, the relations between the two countries have been characterised as cooperative. Bangladesh and India are common members of SAARC, BIMSTEC, IORA and the Commonwealth. The two countries share many cultural ties.
