A court in Chattogram on Wednesday placed criminal Mobarak Hossain Emon, also known as David Emon, on a 5-day remand in a case involving an attack on an under-construction building and a cocktail explosion after demanding Tk 50 lakh from a businessman in Chattagram's Hathazari upazila.
Following a hearing on Wednesday afternoon, Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Lokman Hakim granted the remand petition, said said Additional Superintendent of Police Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz.
Police sought Emon's remand for questioning over the attack and crude bomb explosions at the construction site in the Baradighi Par area of Hathazari, the police official said.
According to police and court sources, the attack and cocktail explosion took place on Jashim Uddin's under-construction building in Baradighir Par occurred last July, after he was allegedly asked to pay Tk 50 lakh in extortion. He later filed a case at Hathazari police station.
David Emon was produced before the court amid tight security this morning. Police security was reinforced around the court premises at the time.
Earlier, David Emon was arrested in the Kotwali area of Jashore on July 29. Based on information he provided, police conducted an operation in Fatikchhari the following day, July 30, recovering a foreign pistol along with a locally-made weapon.
He was produced before the court the day after his arrest, at which time he was shown arrested in a murder case and a weapons case filed at Fatikchhari police station. The court subsequently granted a total of 10-day remand in the two cases for interrogation.
David Emon faces at least 15 cases at various police stations in Chattagram Metropolitan area and district, including charges of murder, weapons possession and extortion.
