Irene Khan stresses highlighting BD's achievements on global stage

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan held a courtesy meeting with Irene Zubaida Khan, Bangladesh's designated Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador.
The courtesy meeting took place at the Minister's office at the Secretariat on Thursday afternoon, according to a press release issued by the ministry.
The release said the meeting focused on highlighting Bangladesh's positive image abroad and ensuring that the country's position and achievements are appropriately presented in the international arena. The government announced on July 8 that renowned human rights activist Irene Khan would be sent to the United Nations as Bangladesh's Permanent Representative.
Irene Khan, who served as Secretary General of human rights organization Amnesty International for eight years from 2001, will replace Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury as Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN.
Irene Khan had been serving since August 1, 2020, as the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. She was the first woman to hold the position.
According to the Information Ministry's press release, discussions also covered the appropriate presentation of Bangladesh's activities and the various programs of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the international media during his participation in the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, Zahir Uddin Swapan and Irene Khan exchanged views on media management during the prime minister's visit, presenting Bangladesh's positions and priorities to the international media, and promoting a positive image of Bangladesh before the global community.
