Bridging Horizons: Singapore and Bangladesh build cultural bridges through art

Art, heritage and contemporary creativity converged in Dhaka on Friday as the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore, in collaboration with Alliance Française de Dhaka, inaugurated “Bridging Horizons: A Visual Dialogue of Nature, Heritage and Innovation”, celebrating the enduring friendship and growing cultural ties between Singapore and Bangladesh.

The exhibition was inaugurated at La Galerie, Alliance Française de Dhaka, as part of programmes marking Singapore’s 61st National Day.

Mr Mitchel Lee, Chargé d’Affaires of the Singapore High Commission in Dhaka, attended the opening ceremony as Chief Guest, while legendary Bangladeshi artist Professor Rafiqun Nabi, Professor Emeritus of the University of Dhaka, was the Guest of Honour. François Chambraud, Director of Alliance Française de Dhaka, attended as Special Guest.

Curated by Harun ar Rashid Tutul, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, the exhibition brings together a diverse collection of artworks exploring nature, heritage, innovation and shared cultural identity.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mitchel Lee underscored the power of art to deepen relationships between nations and peoples.

“Art complements diplomacy by building bridges between people and creating connections that endure long after official engagements conclude,” he said.

Referring to the upcoming milestone in bilateral relations, he added that as Singapore and Bangladesh prepare to commemorate 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2027, the exhibition reflects a partnership built not only on economic and political cooperation, but also on vibrant people-to-people ties and a shared commitment to cultural exchange.

The exhibition features a premier collection of artworks from Singapore alongside works by 14 renowned Bangladeshi master artists. It also showcases works by six emerging Bangladeshi artists, selected through a national open call, bringing established artistic traditions into dialogue with contemporary creative practices.

Organisers said the exhibition seeks to provide more than a display of artworks; it aims to create a space for meaningful artistic exchange and cross-cultural engagement between Singapore and Bangladesh.

Through diverse artistic expressions, Bridging Horizons explores how nature, heritage and innovation can transcend geographical boundaries and reveal shared human experiences. It also highlights the growing significance of cultural diplomacy in strengthening mutual understanding and people-to-people connections.

The exhibition comes at a significant moment in Singapore-Bangladesh relations, with the two countries set to mark 55 years of diplomatic ties next year. Against this backdrop, the exhibition offers a cultural dimension to a bilateral relationship that has continued to expand across economic, political and people-to-people spheres.

By bringing together established and emerging artists from both countries, Bridging Horizons creates a visual conversation across borders—demonstrating how art can serve as both a reflection of cultural identity and a powerful instrument of friendship and diplomacy.
