Two AL leaders arrested in Kushtia over alleged Aug 15 gathering

Police have arrested two brothers, both affiliated with the banned Awami League, in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia for allegedly organising party activists and preparing khichuri ahead of August 15. The arrestees are Sohel Rana Paban, chairman of Bahadurpur Union Parishad and Vice-President of Upazila Jobo League, and his brother Rubel Mahmud Ratan, president of Bahadurpur Union unit of the Swechhasebak League.

Police arrested them around 11:30pm Friday from the Bahadurpur Union Parishad area near Kuchiamora Bazar in the upazila. Police alleged that the two had been secretly carrying out organisational activities and attempting to mobilise party activists ahead of August 15, the 51st death anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bheramara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Jahedur Rahman said the two were arrested to maintain law and order.

Further legal action will be taken in the case, he added.
