The Microfinance Institutions (MFI) Rights Forum on Monday formed a human chain in front of the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) office in the capital, protesting what it described as planned propaganda, harassment, operational disruptions and attempts to undermine microfinance institutions.
Leaders of the organization, including President Abdul Alim, General Secretary Md. Ataur Rahman, Vice President Md. Masud Rana and Office Secretary, spoke at the human chain.
The speakers said the country's microfinance sector has long played a vital role in poverty alleviation, women's empowerment, employment generation, development of small entrepreneurs and strengthening the rural economy.
They urged the authorities to take punitive action, in accordance with existing laws and regulations, against organizations found to be involved in specific allegations.
The MFI Rights Forum leaders also called for ensuring the uninterrupted operations of all licensed and authorized microfinance institutions. They demanded legal action, following proper investigation, against those involved in spreading rumors, negative propaganda and engaging in harassment.
Later, the forum leaders submitted a memorandum to the concerned authorities at the MRA office in Agargaon. The memorandum called for protecting the licenses and legitimate rights of authorized microfinance institutions, ensuring their regular operations and maintaining stability, transparency and accountability in the microfinance sector. The forum leaders warned that if their demands are not addressed promptly, they would resort to tougher protest programs in the future.
