A female student of Class 10 has been rescued from a bathroom at a school in Khulna's Dighalia with her hands, feet and mouth bound.
Construction workers from a nearby building broke down the bathroom door and rescued the girl around 8pm on Thursday, according to Dighalia Police Station chief Hawlader Sanwar Hossain Masum.
The incident took place at Gazirhat Haji Naimuddin Secondary School, reports bdnews24.com.
The student is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Khulna.
The police officer said the girl was able to speak to her family while receiving treatment at the clinic.
According to her account, she entered the bathroom after school ended when someone struck her on the head from behind, causing her to fall to the ground.
"She said the attacker then beat her, tied her hands, legs and mouth, and sprayed her with an anesthetic substance. When she regained consciousness, she found that her hands, legs and mouth were still tied inside the bathroom."
Her screams later drew the attention of construction workers at a neighbouring building, who broke down the bathroom door and rescued her, according to Hawlader.
"She was given first aid locally and was later taken to a private hospital in Khulna," he said.
School headteacher Mrinal Kanti said classes ended at 2pm on Thursday. "The construction workers heard noises coming from the bathroom around 8pm and went to investigate before breaking down the door to rescue the girl.:
The girl's mother said, "After school ended, my daughter entered the bathroom when someone struck her on the head from behind, causing her to fall to the ground. Various parts of my daughter's body were cut with a blade, leaving her bleeding."
Police have yet to establish a motive or identify anyone responsible for the incident. "No one has been able to say anything about this," Hawlader said, adding that officers had been sent to the scene and an investigation was under way.
He said police would seek to arrest those involved.
