Security tightened as threats target several Dhaka embassies

Police have stepped up security in Dhaka's diplomatic district after several embassies reportedly received threatening emails.

Police intensified monitoring after hearing about the reported threats, Abu Khayer, additional deputy commissioner of the Diplomatic Security Division, said on Sunday.

"We have not received any written complaint," he added.

Several embassies in Dhaka, including those of China and Russia, received threatening emails last week.

The missions informed the foreign ministry, which subsequently alerted the Police Headquarters and DMP units, including the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, reports bdnews24.com.

DMP Detective Branch chief Shafiqul Islam said on Sunday that investigators were working to identify and bring to justice those behind the threats, which reportedly demanded money from the embassies.

Police have since stepped up surveillance in the diplomatic zones of Baridhara and Gulshan, deploying additional plainclothes officers alongside uniformed personnel and increasing checkpoint and patrol activity.

Abu Khayer said the heightened vigilance was part of the division's routine response to any incident or message, whether written or verbal. "Full security is always in place," he said.

Shafiqul said three to four embassies and several government offices had received similar messages.

He described the threats as both an act of hostility and an attempt to damage Bangladesh's image, calling them "an anti-state activity" aimed at frightening ambassadors.
