Thikana, the largest Bangladeshi media company outside Bangladesh, has launched “Kemon MP Pelam” (What Kind of MP Did We Get?), a new citizen-accountability television format designed to bring elected representatives face-to-face with the people who elected them.
In a first for Bangladeshi political media, the pilot episode brought *Md. Fazley Houda Babul, Member of Parliament for Naogaon-3 (Mahadevpur–Badalgachhi),* before an audience of thousands in an open town hall held in his own constituency. Citizens submitted questions in advance, while the final selection was made exclusively by the moderator. The MP did not see any of the questions beforehand.
The questions focused on six key areas of public life: *rule of law and justice, employment, quality of living, education-health-technology, expatriate welfare, and agriculture*. As the MP responded, his documented six-month record was displayed on screen, allowing viewers to assess his answers against his record of public service and progress on commitments.
The programme was hosted and moderated by *Khaled Muhiuddin, Editor-in-Chief of Thikana*, former head of Deutsche Welle’s Bengali service and one of the most recognized political interviewers in the Bangla-speaking world.
Asking questions is the citizen’s right; answering them is the representative’s duty. Kemon MP Pelam simply puts that old truth on a stage — in the middle of the constituency, in front of the people the answers belong to,**” said Khaled Muhiuddin, Editor-in-Chief, Thikana.
Thikana said that after 37 years of telling the stories of Bangladeshis, the new format aims to put the microphone directly in citizens’ hands. While Episode One focuses on Naogaon-3, the organization says every constituency in Bangladesh deserves an opportunity to host the programme and every MP is invited to take the same seat occupied by Fazley Houda Babul.
