Ansar-VDP launches “Let’s Green the Country, Bangladesh First” tree-planting campaign in Nilphamari
The government has undertaken a special initiative to plant 250 million trees over the next five years to combat the adverse impacts of climate change and maintain environmental balance. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for afforestation to become a daily practice as part of his vision to transform Bangladesh into a “green settlement.” In line with this national goal, greening activities are being intensified across the country under the visionary leadership of Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad, Director General of Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force.
As part of the initiative, an exceptional programme was implemented in Nilphamari on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the initiative of the district commandant. On the ninth day of the first phase of ongoing VDP and TDP basic training, 375 trainees across six upazilas of the district were each provided with a tree sapling, including fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal varieties.
Local residents described the initiative as a significant step toward raising environmental awareness at the grassroots level.
The distribution of the green saplings generated considerable enthusiasm and emotion among the trainees. After completing their training, they returned home and planted the saplings appropriately. The young men and women are not stopping at planting trees; alongside caring for the saplings, they are also encouraging their families and neighbours to take part in environmental conservation.
With nearly six million members nationwide, the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force is well positioned to play a major role in achieving the government’s national target of planting 250 million trees. Its extensive network across remote areas of the country could rapidly transform the ongoing tree-planting initiative into a nationwide social movement.
Driven by a sense of social responsibility, environmental awareness and public welfare, the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force has embraced the slogan, “Let’s Green the Country, Bangladesh First.” The spontaneous participation of people and the active engagement of the force at the grassroots level are expected to become a major strength in achieving the country’s future afforestation targets.
