‘Taekwondo should be spread in educational institutions’
National Sports Council (NSC) Executive Director (Joint Secretary) MdDaulatuzzaman Khan (Joint Secretary) has announced plans to make Taekwondo, an Olympic-listed sport, more popular in the country's educational institutions.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 5th Federation Cup Taekwondo competition that began at the National Sports Council gymnasium on Friday, he said, 'If this sport spreads, on the one hand, new players will be created, and on the other hand, students will also receive important training in self-defense.'
The chief guest also said, 'We are interested in spreading the sport in educational institutions. Along with sports, this will create self-defense capabilities among students, which can play an important role in the current socio-economic reality of the country.' At that time, Bangladesh Taekwondo Federation General Secretary Mahmudul Islam Rana and Federation member, cultural figure, and BNP Media Cell member ShairulKabir Khan were present.
Executive Director Md. DaulatuzzamanKhan further said, 'Taekwondo is a sport listed in the Olympics. This sport is very important. For those who are experienced in this sport at the international level, additional opportunities are also created for studying in foreign universities.' He emphasized not only on producing players but also on establishing Taekwondo as a profession in the future. According to him, by adopting sports as a profession, it is possible to gain income as well as health and international recognition. He wants to link the development of Taekwondo with the government's initiative to establish sports as a profession.
The official also emphasized on taking forward the infrastructure and training activities of Taekwondo in a planned manner in the country. He believes that it is possible to conduct large-scale activities from a small scale by utilizing the existing facilities of the National Sports Council. He said, 'If we can work in a small place but in a planned manner, we can do a lot of work in this area. When we were young, there were many sports in this place.
ShairulKabir Khan, a member of the Taekwondo Federation's ad hoc committee, cultural figure, and member of the BNP's media cell, said, "If it comes under the spotlight of media publicity, people's interest in this sport will increase and Taekwondo will get a chance to move forward."
He hopes that through coordinated initiatives and planned activities, it will be possible to create a strong foundation for Taekwondo in Bangladesh. As it creates
opportunities for self-defense and future careers in addition to sports, educational institutions can be one of the main areas for the spread of this sport.
Regarding such a big event, General Secretary Mahmudul Islam Rana said, "Boys and girls have been out of the sport for a long time. The Federation Cup is a great opportunity for them. Through this competition, players will get a chance to develop their talents. And we will find players who can participate at the national level. Those who do well at the national level from the Federation Cup will get opportunities in various international competitions including the SA Games.' This year, more than 450 competitors (boys and girls) from 17 districts and four services are participating in the Federation Cup.
