India monitors Bangladesh as Dhaka signals interest in 'Mecca Defence Pact'
New Delhi is keeping a close watch on diplomatic developments in Dhaka following signals that Bangladesh may be open to joining the newly formed "Mecca Defence Pact" a trilateral collective security framework signed earlier this month between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan.
Addressing reporters at a regular Ministry of External Affairs briefing in New Delhi on Friday, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal delivered a carefully calibrated response when questioned on comments made by senior figures in Bangladesh's diplomatic leadership.
The query followed public statements from both Bangladesh's Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman, and Deputy Foreign Minister, Humayun Kabir, addressing Dhaka's stance on the emerging alliance.
Jaiswal noted that should Bangladesh choose to align with the pact, such a step would constitute a sovereign decision for Dhaka and ought not to cause unease to third parties. However, he emphasized that New Delhi maintains a vigilant eye on all regional developments capable of impinging upon Indian security interests, and stands prepared to take any measures necessary to safeguard them.
The pact, signed on 7 August in Saudi Arabia, features a NATO-style mutual defense clause. While proponents frame the agreement as a stabilizing force for the wider region, strategic analysts in India are closely examining the geopolitical ripples of a potential expansion that would bring a key South Asian neighbor into a security alignment alongside Islamabad, Ankara, and Riyadh.
