Seven shops gutted in Sirajganj fire
Seven shops were gutted in a fire at Nimgachi Bazar in Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj early Monday.
The fire broke out at the intersection of three roads in the market in the early hours and quickly spread to nearby shops, locals said.
They said local people initially tried to put out the fire but failed as the flames intensified rapidly.
On information, two fire-fighting units from Tarash and Raiganj reached the spot and brought the blaze under control.
The affected shops included a medicine shop owned by Soleman Talukder of Nimgachi village, a paan and cigarette shop owned by Haider Ali of Chandibhog village, and shops run by Digendranath Sarker, Sadhan Kumar Sarker, Khudiram Sarker, Ataur and Abdullah.
The traders said their businesses, built through years of hard work and savings, were destroyed within a short time.
Some of them were also running their businesses with borrowed money. They said the loss of their shops and goods had pushed them into severe financial hardship.
Muhammad Manjurul Alam, warehouse inspector of Tarash Fire Service, said the fire was initially suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit.
He said the preliminary estimate put the damage at around Tk 8 lakh.
"However, the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage can be confirmed after a further investigation," he said.
