37,000 seek deposits from Sammilito Islami Bank

At least 37,000 customers of five troubled banks merged into state-owned Sammilito Islami Bank (SIB) have applied to withdraw deposits totalling about Tk 23 billion in three days.

SIB Managing Director Abedur Rahman Sikder told bdnews24.com on Thursday that around 37,000 applications had been submitted, compared with 19,000 the previous day, bdnews24 reports.

Following the central bank's decision on Jul 20, 'Sammilito Islami Bank' assumed full responsibility for the Shariah-based EXIM Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, Union Bank, and Social Islami Bank.

The entity began its operations after gaining full control last August.

The merged bank has 760 branches, 698 sub-branches, 511 agent banking outlets and 975 ATM booths across the country.

The government has provided Tk 200 billion in capital support to SIB, which began operations with authorised capital of Tk 350 billion.

The bank began accepting applications on Sept 1 for depositors to withdraw up to Tk 1 million, with applications open until Sept 7.

Under Bangladesh Bank directives, SIB will allow individual depositors to withdraw funds from current and savings accounts, along with the principal amounts of term deposits.

Abedur said the bank will begin disbursing the funds after Sept 7, following verification.

Applications are being accepted at SIB branches and sub-branches across the country.

With the cancellation of the haircut, depositors will be entitled to interest on their deposits.

However, those who withdraw their entire balance must give a written undertaking forfeiting any future interest and can receive the full amount only after agreeing to the condition.
