‘Untold Story’ explores memory, unspoken narratives at AFD
A group art exhibition titled ‘Untold Story’, exploring memory, identity, heritage and the often unspoken dimensions of human experience, was inaugurated at La Galerie of Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) in the capital's Dhanmondi on Tuesday.
Curated by Fareha Zeba, the exhibition brings together artist books and contemporary artworks by a group of artists working across painting, drawing, collage, stitching, textiles, found materials and experimental book forms.
Frédéric Inza, French embassy Deputy Head of Mission and Tanvir Ahmed, Managing Director of Sheltech Group and Envoy Legacy attended the inauguration ceremony as guests of honour.
At the heart of the exhibition is the artist’s book, presented not simply as an object to be read but as an intimate artistic space for preserving memories, revisiting personal and cultural histories, and giving form to experiences that often resist conventional language.
The exhibition extends beyond the pages of the books through related artworks, bringing private narratives into the gallery space and creating opportunities for individual memories to resonate with wider collective experiences.
‘Untold Story’ features works by Esha Ahmed, Fouzia Mahin Choudhury, Kazmin Samia, Shulekha Chaudhury, Sumana Akter and Surovi Akter.
Guest artists Alia Kamal, Arpita Singha, Mahmuda Siddika, Rafia Mahjabeen, Rituparna Saha and Venessa Kaiser are also participating in the exhibition.
According to the organisers, the core group of artists explored the theme over the course of a year through th
e format of artist books, while the guest artists engaged with the concept over a comparatively shorter period.
Their diverse approaches reflect different ways in which memory and lived experiences can be recorded, reinterpreted and expressed through artistic practice.
Rather than presenting a single narrative, ‘Untold Story’ embraces fragmentation, difference and the spaces between what is revealed and what remains concealed, inviting visitors to reflect on how deeply personal stories can often echo experiences shared by many, according to AFD.
The exhibition will remain open to visitors until September 9 at AFD's La Galerie, daily from 3 pm to 9 pm.
