China Ambassador Cup Wushu C'ship concludes
The eighth China Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship drew to a close in Dhaka on Sunday, with the two-day tournament underlining the growing sporting ties between Bangladesh and China.
A total of 279 athletes from 19 clubs took part in the competition at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur. Organised by the Bangladesh Wushu Federation with the support of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, the championship was aimed at strengthening the sport at grassroots level and providing a pathway for emerging athletes.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque attended the closing and prize-giving ceremony as the chief guest. Stressing the importance of closer cooperation with China, he said the government was attaching particular importance to sports diplomacy as a means of strengthening bilateral relations.
He added that efforts were under way to secure Chinese cooperation not only for Wushu but also for the wider development of sports in Bangladesh. China, he noted, remains a major centre of martial arts, while Bangladesh also wants to develop Taekwondo, Karate and Judo alongside Wushu.
Federation General Secretary Md Dildar Hasan Dilu said the principal objective of the championship was to identify and develop talent from the grassroots. The federation is also pursuing a long-term plan to win medals at Asian and international level, with Bangladesh scheduled to host the South Asian Junior Wushu Championship next January.
Bangladesh Wushu Federation President Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Tournament Committee Chairman SM Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan were also present.
In the results, Bangladesh Army won the Jiti Service event, with Border Guard Bangladesh finishing runners-up. In the Jiti Civil event, Chinese Wushu School of Cox's Bazar claimed the title, while Rajshahi District Sports Organisation finished second.
Modern Martial Art Training Centre won the Display event, ahead of Rajshahi District Sports Organisation. Bangladesh Army also topped both the Display Service Team and Duilian Service Team events, with BGB finishing runners-up in each.
Chinese Wushu School of Cox's Bazar won the Duilian Civil event, while Abdul Jalil Chowdhury Martial Art Academy finished second.
Earlier, with the aim of preparing a stage for success in the international arena by bringing talented players from the grassroots, the eighth China Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship began at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday with the participation of 279 athletes from 19 clubs.
Former Air Vice-Marshal and Member of Parliament Altaf Hossain Choudhury formally inaugurated the meet as the chief guest.
