Bangladeshi girls thrash Pakistan 5-1 despite adverse weather
Asia Cup Hockey. After thrashing Chinese Taipei 7-0 in the first match, the Bangladesh U-20 women's hockey team outclassed Pakistan 5-1 in their second match on Sunday.
The Bangladesh girls overcame the adverse weather, incessant rain and cold in Hulunbuir City, China, to dominate the field.
Coach Arif Ali's team, taking on the challenge of the bitter cold, adopted an aggressive strategy from the start of the match. Bangladesh took the lead with a brilliant field goal by Lonima Nupur in the 9th minute of the first quarter. Nadira Ima scored another eye-catching field goal in the 19th minute of the second quarter to double the gap. The red-green team took complete control of the match by leading 2-0 in the first half.
Despite the rain increasing in the third quarter, Bangladesh's attacking edge did not diminish. Captain Sharika Rimon scored the team's third goal with a perfect shot from a penalty stroke in the 33rd minute. In the 41st minute of the match, Pakistan's Maria Shakil scored a field goal to make the score 3-1, but just two minutes later, Bangladesh's Kona Akhter secured the team's fourth goal with a great field goal in the 43rd minute. Then, just before the final whistle of the match, Irene Akhter Riya scored the team's fifth and final goal from a penalty corner in the 57th minute.
Despite such hostile weather, the Bangladesh team is now in a good mood and quite confident after winning two consecutive matches. Bangladesh has two more matches left in the group stage. The federation has expressed hope that the girls will bring more success to the country by maintaining this winning streak in the next matches of the tournament.
Earlier, Bangladesh's U-20 women's hockey team made a flying start in the U-20 Asia Cup with a 7-0 victory over Chinese Taipei in its opening match held on Saturday in Moqi, China.
Bangladesh controlled the match from the outset, playing an attacking brand of hockey and keeping Chinese Taipei under constant pressure.
