Pink, famous for flying above crowds while singing live, turns the page to 47
Most pop stars keep their feet firmly on the stage, but Pink prefers to take flight.
At her concerts, she can be found high above the crowd, strapped into a harness, spinning through the air while singing live.
What might sound like a once-in-a-lifetime stunt has become one of the defining features of a career that has lasted more than two decades.
Pink turns 47. And if age is supposed to bring a pop star closer to slowing down, she does not seem to have received the memo.
Billboard ranks her seventh among the century's top female artists, placing her ahead of Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and Nicki Minaj, and behind only Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Adele, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga.
Quarter of a century into an industry career that often cuts artists short, she continues filling stadiums, pulling off her own stunts, and speaking her mind without hesitation.
The Girl Who Became Pink
Born Alecia Beth Moore in 1979, she arrived in 2000 with “Can't Take Me Home”, an album few people remember now. What people do remember is what came next.
“M!ssundaztood”, her second record, is where Pink became Pink.
“Get the Party Started”, “Don't Let Me Get Me”, “Just Like a Pill” were more than hits.
They were a personality announcing itself. Snarling, a little wounded, entirely uninterested in being anyone's idea of a nice pop girl.
“Lady Marmalade”, her all-star team-up with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mya for “Moulin Rouge!”, went to number one and won her a Grammy. It could have been the peak. It was not even close.
The Hits Kept Coming
Pink's career did not follow the usual pattern of one big breakthrough followed by a gradual decline.
Instead, the hits kept arriving, from “Who Knew” and “U + Ur Hand” to “So What”, “Raise Your Glass”, “Try” and “What About Us”.
Then came “Just Give Me a Reason”, her 2013 duet with Nate Ruess.
The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned two Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year.
Before that came another career-defining moment: “Lady Marmalade”, her collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and Mýa for Moulin Rouge!.
The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
According to figures published by Pink's official website, she has sold more than 60 million album equivalents worldwide and scored 15 Billboard Hot 100 top-10 singles.
