'Despite deprivation, I never deviate from nationalist ideals'
Despite deprivation, I will never deviate from the ideals and democratic values of nationalist said Dr Shahjahan, acting director of Cumilla Medical College (CuMC).
He said, "I joined Chhatra Dal politics after being admitted to Comilla Victoria College in 1988. I remained active in Chhatra Dal politics even after being admitted to Chittagong Medical College in 1991."
He also said that he had to face torture and various adversities during his student life due to his political identity.
After completing his MBBS and internship, he returned to Comilla in 1999 and started medical services. He was elected as a central councilor twice in a row from the DAB-supported panel in the BMA elections of 2000 and 2002. After joining the 22nd BCS in 2003, he started his career as a government doctor.
He claimed that after the Awami League government came to power in 2009, he had to face repeated OSDs, transfers and various obstacles in joining the workplace due to his political identity. Despite various adversities, he completed his training and later was promoted to the post of Assistant Director on his own merit and finally to the post of Deputy Director on January 31, 2024.
Dr Shahjahan said, "I will not sacrifice my ideals for a promotion or any position. Since my student life, I have been a member of Chhatra Dal, Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), and BNP. My family also believes in nationalist ideals. Whether I get promoted or not, the ideals of DAB and BNP are in my blood, and InshaAllah they will remain in my life."
He also said, "In the past, attempts have been made to humiliate me using a picture and pressure me in various ways. However, these adversities could not divert me from my nationalist ideals."
Dr. Shahjahan firmly said, "I will become a director one day on my own merit, but I have no desire or desire to become the director of Comilla Medical College Hospital."
