Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman took charge as the President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday (9 September 2026).
He will serve as the president of the UN's highest representative and global multilateral forum for the next year.
According to the program schedule on the UNGA website, the closing segment of the 80th UNGA session was held at UN Headquarters in New York at 9:00pm Bangladesh time yesterday, followed by the formal oath-taking ceremony of newly elected president Dr. Khalilur Rahman.
Before taking the oath, he participated in a media briefing at 8:45pm Bangladesh time, where he outlined his vision for conducting the UNGA's activities during the upcoming session.
Following the ceremony, Dr. Khalilur Rahman chaired the first plenary meeting of the 81st UNGA session at 1:00am Wednesday (Bangladesh time).
