Measles deaths cross 1,000
Deaths continue due to measles and measles symptoms across Bangladesh. -Collected
Bangladesh has reported three more deaths with measles symptoms in a 24-hour count, pushing the combined toll from confirmed measles and suspected cases above 1,000.
Another 69 people tested positive for measles during the period.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 100 people have died from confirmed measles and 902 from measles symptoms, taking the total to 1,002.
The health directorate has been publishing measles data since Mar 15.
Its Wednesday bulletin said one person died in Dhaka Division and two in Mymensingh between 8am Tuesday and 8am Wednesday.
Dhaka Division recorded the most deaths from measles symptoms at 404, followed by Sylhet with 156. Rajshahi reported 92, Chattogram 65, Barishal 57, Mymensingh 77, Khulna 37 and Rangpur 14.
Another 1,119 people with measles symptoms sought hospital treatment, with 1,034 admitted. Total admissions have reached 147,393, while 141,819 patients have been discharged.
Suspected cases stand at 167,580 and confirmed cases at 19,904.
As not all patients are tested, the true scale remains difficult to determine.
Experts blame inadequate vaccination and the absence of measles management "guidelines".
They say antibody testing should establish whether vaccinated children have developed sufficient immunity, adding that timely decisions and implementation could have prevented the outbreak from reaching this level.
