Former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, has been shown arrested in a murder case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam issued the order to show him arrested on Thursday.
Kalimullah was brought to the court from jail. Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Zahurul Islam filed an application seeking to show him arrested in the murder case filed with Kafrul Police Station over the killing of Tarikul Islam Rubel. After hearing the arguments, the court ordered that he be shown arrested in the case.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), at around 8:00 p.m. on July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement, students and members of the public were holding a procession and rally in front of Bijoy Rakin City in Kafrul. Tarikul Islam Rubel was shot there. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene.
A murder case was filed with Kafrul Police Station on March 5, 2025, in connection with the incident. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 47 others, including former ministers and members of parliament, were named as accused in the case.
In the application seeking to show Kalimullah arrested, the investigating officer stated that the case is a politically sensitive and high-profile murder case related to the anti-discrimination movement. During the investigation, evidence and information have emerged indicating that accused Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah was directly and indirectly involved in the incident. Verification of his name and address is still underway. Under these circumstances, the investigating officer said, showing the accused arrested in the case is essential for a proper investigation and to ensure justice.
