Hasan Mahmud among the nominees for ICC Player of the Month Award
Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud is among the feature on the men’s shortlist for the ICC Player of the Month award for August as the International Cricket Council has announced the nominees for the ICC Player of the Month awards for August on Thursday.
Sri Lanka batter Sonal Dinusha and England pace bowler Ollie Robinson are the other nominees while Thailand’s Suleeport Laomi and Nannapat Koncharoenkai are in contention for the women’s honour alongside Lucy Barnett, who becomes the first player from the Isle of Man to make the shortlist.
The three shortlisted players in both men’s and women’s categories are selected based on their performances throughout the month of August.
Hasan Mahmud was at the heart of a historic month for Bangladesh, leading their bowling attack to a first-ever Test win on Australian soil.
The pace bowler was outstanding in Darwin, taking 6/55 in the first innings and following it up with 3/56 in the second to spearhead Bangladesh's victory push and seal a landmark result for his side.
Across the two-match Test series, Hasan Mahmud finished with nine wickets at an average of 19.77.
His performance in Darwin will go down as one of the defining bowling displays behind Bangladesh's breakthrough win in Australia.
Dinusha was resolute in the ICC World Test Championship series against India, belying his experience of only three previous Tests. The 25-year-old left-hander amassed 420 runs including scores of 100 and 84 in the first Test in Galle that his team lost and produced scores of 103 and 133 not out to save the next Test in Colombo, becoming only the third batter in the history of the game to score twin-centuries for a team that was made to follow on.
Meanwhile, Robinson was the Player of the Match in the first two Tests against Pakistan with match hauls of eight for 80 and eight for 35, helping England to take a winning 2-0 lead in the three-match series. His outstanding seam bowling in English conditions saw him finish with 16 wickets at an average of 7.18, lifting him 22 slots to fifth position in the ICC Men’s Test Bowling Rankings.
The three nominees for either category are shortlisted based on performances from the first to the last day of each calendar month. The shortlist is then voted on by the independent ICC Voting Academy* and fans around the world. The ICC Voting Academy comprises prominent members of the cricket fraternity including well-known journalists, former players, broadcasters and members of the ICC Hall of Fame. The Voting Academy submit their votes by email and hold a 90 per cent share of the vote.
Fans registered with the ICC can vote via the ICC website, accounting for the remaining 10 per cent. Winners are announced every second week of the month on ICC’s digital channels.
