Amitabh Bachchan has opened up about the emotional toll of hosting “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, saying some contestants’ personal stories make it difficult for him to contain his emotions while carrying on with the programme.
The veteran Indian actor has hosted the popular quiz show for many years, but recently wrote on his blog that the experience can go far beyond questions, answers and prize money, Anandabazar reports.
Contestants often speak about financial hardship, personal struggles and difficult periods in their lives while appearing on the show.
Amitabh said some of those accounts had affected him deeply and made it difficult to remain composed as host.
Writing on his blog shortly after midnight on Sept 7, he said: “Some contestants come with such serious personal stories that it becomes difficult for us to rein in our emotions for them. At the same time, continuing with the job of hosting the programme also becomes difficult.”
“I will not say much more about this. But it is truly a heartbreaking experience.”
He added that there were some stories he did not want to discuss publicly in detail.
Amitabh ended the post by saying it was very late and that he felt like “retiring”, adding: “The night is calling me. Love to everyone.”
The remark appeared in the context of ending his late-night blog post rather than an announcement that he was retiring from acting or leaving the show.
The 18th season of “Kaun Banega Crorepati” began on Aug 10, with Amitabh once again returning as host.
This season carries the theme “Sochna Padega”, encouraging contestants to think carefully before answering questions.
Several contestants have already spoken on the programme about financial difficulties and other personal challenges, experiences Amitabh says can make hosting emotionally demanding.
