Walking may lower early death risk: Study

When it comes to walking's benefits, public messaging tends to fixate on a single, daunting goalpost: hit 10,000 daily steps.

For millions of busy or older adults, logging four to five miles a day simply is not realistic.

If that target feels out of reach, three new 2026 studies offer a welcome alternative, according to Psychology Today.

Walking faster or for slightly longer stretches can deliver many of the same benefits in far more achievable ways, the website said.

Walking For Brain Health

A July 2026 study in Translational Psychiatry analysed wrist-accelerometer data from 66,483 UK Biobank participants, Psychology Today said.

Rather than looking only at total moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), first author Collin Sakal and colleagues examined how that activity was spread across the day, it added.

Longer, less-fragmented bouts of activity were linked to a lower future risk of dementia, depression and anxiety, independent of total activity levels.
The lowest observed dementia risk was tied to MVPA bouts lasting at least 13 minutes, while the lowest risks of depression and anxiety were linked to bouts of 36 minutes.

The most striking finding was that people with the least fragmented activity carried substantially lower risks of dementia, depression and anxiety than those with the most fragmented patterns.

High-resolution MRI scans showed continuous movement bouts preserved greater volume in the left hippocampus, a critical memory hub, and reduced white matter hyperintensities, markers of small-vessel brain damage, as per the report.

For people carrying the APOE4 gene, a major Alzheimer's risk factor, sustained movement bouts provided a robust, un-plateaued buffer against genetic vulnerability.

Older Adults Who Walk Faster

A second study published in July in Neurology has looked at cognitive ageing and brain health among people aged 80 and older.

Researchers led by Oshadi Jayakody examined five international cohorts and defined "super movers" as older adults whose gait speed was at least 1.5 standard deviations above the age- and sex-adjusted average. The study found that super movers had a 51 percent lower risk of developing cognitive impairment over four to five years compared with their peers who did not meet that threshold.

They also experienced slower cognitive decline and retained greater volume in specific parts of the hippocampus. Data from the RUSH Memory and Aging Project offered another clue. Super movers had better cognitive performance during their lives and lower prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

However, researchers found no significant differences in dementia-related pathology after death.

That distinction is important, according to Psychology Today. The study does not show that walking fast prevents Alzheimer's disease.

Instead, it suggests that maintaining a high level of functional mobility may be linked to greater cognitive resilience, even when typical dementia-related brain pathology is present.

Faster or Longer Walks May Lower Mortality Risk

The latest study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on Sept 8, has examined 64,743 UK Biobank participants using wrist-worn accelerometers.

First author Le Wei and colleagues analysed how different combinations of walking intensity and daily step counts were associated with all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality.

The findings suggest that rigid step targets may not tell the whole story.

Increasing walking intensity at a lower volume may provide health benefits comparable with walking at a lower intensity for a greater volume, according to the study.

Among people averaging fewer than 5,000 steps a day, a peak 30-minute cadence of 80 steps per minute was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality.

For those taking 5,000 to 7,500 steps a day, even a cadence of 60 steps per minute was associated with lower mortality than the study's lowest-activity reference group.

The lowest overall mortality risk was found among people taking 7,500 to 10,000 steps a day, with the most favourable association seen at a brisk pace of around 100 steps per minute.

Cardiovascular mortality showed similar patterns.

The authors summed up the findings in a BMJ Group press release by saying that "higher intensity at lower volume can provide health benefits comparable to that of lower intensity but higher volume", according to Psychology Today.

How to Get More From a Daily Walk

The findings suggest that getting more from a daily walk is not simply a matter of reaching a particular step count. Adjusting both intensity and duration may offer a more practical approach.

Consolidate shorter walks: When possible, replace sporadic short bursts of movement with one continuous 15-to-30-minute brisk walk, keeping the pace uninterrupted.

Focus on pace rather than step count: When time or physical capacity limits the number of steps, walking with purpose can be an alternative. A cadence of around 80 or more steps per minute, or roughly 20 steps every 15 seconds, for at least 30 minutes can provide a practical target.

Find the right balance: On days when there is not enough time for a longer, slower walk, a shorter, faster walk may be an option. Adjusting speed and duration can help make walking more efficient.

For regular walkers, the goal does not have to be "10,000 or bust".

A more useful question may be whether it is possible to walk briskly for 30 minutes rather than trying to reach 10,000 steps every day.

Step counts remain a useful and easy-to-track measure, particularly through smartphones and fitness trackers. But pace, duration and continuity can provide information that a single daily step total cannot capture.
