63 foreigners detained in Chattogram over online scam
Police have detained 63 foreigners, mostly from Laos, Pakistan and China, on charges of involvement in online scam from a rented residential building in Chattogram.
The police operation was conducted at an eight-storey building on Road 4 of the Jalalabad Krishnachura residential area under Khulshi police station. The operation was carried out on Thursday by the Counter Terrorism Unit of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), assisted by Khulshi police.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Faisal Ahmed made the statement at a press conference on Friday afternoon.
According to police, none of the 63 arrestees had passports. However, police believe that all of their passports have been deposited with one person and that person was also responsible for renting the building they were staying at.
Police recovered 134 used mobile phones of different brands, 57 laptops, an Apple tablet, a CPU, a Samsung monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, a printer, five pen drives and four SIM cards.
CMP official Faisal said at the press conference that the fraudsters have chosen Bangladesh due to extensive operations by law enforcers against online fraud in countries like China, Laos, and Cambodia. With both domestic and foreign help, the fraudsters are staying in various parts of the country, including Chattogram.
Of the arrestees, 62 have been arrested in a case under the Cyber Security Act.
The detainees included 35 nationals of Laos, 21 Pakistanis, five Chinese, one Nepali and one Vietnamese national while the identification of the remaining detainees was still underway, he said.
