'Nationwide extensive vaccination prog to begin on Sept 26'
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain has said a nationwide extensive vaccination programme will begin on September 26.
"The regular immunisation programme will also continue to protect children from measles," he said.
The minister said this while addressing a free medical camp as the chief guest at Paragaon Eidgah ground in Rupganj, Narayanganj, organised by the Upazila unit of BNP and the Rupganj Private Hospital Clinic and Diagnostic Association on the occasion of the 48th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The Health Minister said most of the children with measles who are coming to hospitals have not been vaccinated. Therefore, there is no alternative to vaccination to protect children from measles, he added. Sakhawat Husain said the previous government had left no vaccines in stock.
"Under the dynamic leadership of the Prime Minister, two crore doses of vaccine were procured within just 21 days and two crore children aged six months to 59 months were vaccinated," he said, adding that the government is committed to fulfilling the Prime Minister's pledge to ensure good health for all.
Regarding measles, the Health Minister said measles had occurred in the country before as well. However, children are currently dying after contracting pneumonia due to nutritional deficiencies, he continued.
In this situation, vaccination is very important for protecting children, he said, adding, "The regular vaccination programme will continue so that no child suddenly falls ill."
Among others, Narsingdi-3 constituency lawmaker Manzur Elahi, Narsingdi-5 constituency lawmaker Engineer Md Ashraf Uddin Bakul, Narayanganj-5 constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Abul Kalam, Women's Reserved Seat-328, MP, Momtaz Alo and Narayanganj District BNP Convener Professor Mamun Mahmud, along with local leade, were present at the medical camp.
