The discovery that would reshape cancer treatment began with a noise complaint.
In the early 2000s, Zhen Xu, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, was testing high-frequency sound waves on pig hearts when colleagues complained about the noise from her amplifier.
To appease them, she adjusted the pulse rate and accidentally stumbled upon something remarkable.
A hole appeared in the pig heart tissue within a minute. "I thought I was dreaming," Xu, now a professor at Michigan, later recalled, the BBC reports.
That accidental discovery is now known as histotripsy -- and it is one of the most closely watched developments in modern oncology.
What It Is and How It Works
Histotripsy uses focused ultrasound energy to create tiny, rapidly collapsing bubbles that mechanically break apart tumour tissue at the cellular level.
No incisions, heat, or radiation are involved.
A robotic arm guides the device over the tumour, delivering ultrasound in quick bursts. The patient's immune system then clears the remains.
Most procedures are completed in one to three hours, often in a single outpatient session, states Healthtree.
Where It Stands
The US Food and Drug Administration cleared histotripsy for liver tumours in October 2023, supported by clinical trials showing a 95.5 percent technical success rate and a low rate of serious complications, as per the BBC.
In June, the UK became the first European country to approve it, making it available on the NHS.
Research into kidney, pancreatic, breast, and brain tumours is ongoing.
The Immune System Angle
Perhaps the most exciting frontier is histotripsy's potential effect on the immune system.
By mechanically rupturing tumour cells, the treatment releases debris that may alert the immune system to cancer's presence -- potentially triggering attacks on untreated tumours elsewhere in the body.
Researchers are exploring whether pairing histotripsy with immunotherapy could one day allow doctors to treat multiple tumours by targeting just one, though trials remain in the early stages, according to Healthtree.
Histotripsy is not a cure, and its pioneer is the first to say so.
But for patients without surgical options, sound waves are quietly opening a new chapter in cancer care.
