Twin health hazards stoke fear in people
The situation of dengue and measles has taken a serious turn in Bangladesh as the recorded eight more deaths due to the mosquito-borne disease while Eight children died with measles-like symptoms in 24 hours till 8:00am on Monday.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), with the latest fatalities, on one hand, the number of dengue deaths has now stood at 157 this year, the combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths rose to 1,030.
A record 1,733 people were hospitalized with dengue fever across the countrybetween 8am Sunday and 8am Monday, according to a DGHS bulletin issued on Monday.
During the same 24-hour period, 1,177 new suspected measles cases were reported, taking the nationwide tally to 172,720. With the latest figures, 152,117 patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country so far. Of them, 146,400 have been discharged.
The number of suspected measles cases in the country has reached 172,720, while 20,124 cases have been confirmed.
The DGHS cautioned that not all patients who visit hospitals or those who remain outside hospitals are tested for measles. As a result, the exact number of people infected with measles cannot be determined.
1,282 dengue patients were discharged in the same 24-hour period. This year, 53,570 dengue patients have been hospitalised and 49,375 discharged.
The health directorate has tracked dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. In 2023, 321,179 patients were hospitalised and 1,705 died -- the highest figures recorded. Last year, more than 400 died and about 102,000 were diagnosed.
