Construction work is underway Near Kuakata's Gangamati Mangrove forest ara

Gofran Palash, Kalapara (Patuakhali): Construction work is underway near the mangrove forest area of ​​Gangamati Lake—a popular sunrise viewing spot—in Kuakata, Patuakhali. Although construction has proceeded unimpeded for the past four days, neither the Forest Department nor the Land Office has taken any action. This has raised concerns among environmentalists regarding the potential destruction of the mangrove forest and natural water bodies.

Ordinary citizens are reluctant to speak out, as influential figures are reportedly behind the construction. This work is continuing in defiance of a High Court directive prohibiting any construction outside the embankment—spanning from Lemburbon on Kuakata Beach through Gangamati to Kauar Char—aimed at protecting the environment, nature, and the tourism zone.

Sources indicate that a wooden structure is being erected near the water body and lake; support pillars have already been installed, and work on the wooden decking is currently in progress. Despite the ongoing construction next to the lush mangrove forest, no one is willing to speak to the media about who is building it or for what purpose. However, rumors suggest that three influential individuals are driving the project and have made strategic preparations—including high-level connections—to ensure the work continues without interruption.

Environmental activist Md. Nazrul Islam stated, "The protected mangrove forest of Gangamati is an environmentally sensitive area. Constructing any structures near the natural water bodies or lakes within this protected mangrove zone poses an environmental risk and threatens to destroy the forest. Furthermore, there are High Court directives in place to protect the Kuakata beach area."

Alamgir Hossain, the Gangamati Beat Officer of the Forest Department's Mahipur Range, stated that he attempted to halt the construction on the very first day. However, the builders ignored his objections, claiming the land as their own, and continued with the work. Nevertheless, he stated that he is communicating with the Upazila land administration and taking the necessary steps.

Md. Yasin Sadek, the Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kalapara, said that inquiries would be made into the matter and appropriate action taken.
