'Government is revamping urban health system'
State Minister for Health Dr. MA Muhith on Tuesday said that, it is not possible to build a sustainable national health system keeping urban healthcare out of the mainstream.
While speaking at a national consultation meeting on sustainable SRHR ecosystem at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital, he said, "The government is reforming the national health system by keeping a policy to bring the urban healthcare under the health ministry."
The program was organized by the CSO Forum. Dr Muhith said, "We are not just building a health system for today but think about the future. Moreover, this decision has been taken enlightening the present reality."
The junior minister added that, till now urban health system has been directed through city corporation, municipalities and NGO's. But now a fulfill and sustainable framework is being made under the government through considering the flexibility and positive aspects of that model, he added. Health Services Division and Family Planning Department will jointly look after the future structure of urban health.
Dr. Muhith elaborately came up and further said that, already we have promised to recruit one lakh new health workers at the grassroots level. This new force will be given integrated training under the same framework as the existing 4o thousands workers, he added. He further mentioned that the issue of launching evening clinic services is also being seriously considered through keeping in mind the benefits of low income working people in the city. On the other hand a plan is being prepared by determining specific ward based catchment areas to ensure services for the floating population as well as disabled women and children in the city.
In addition, urging the government to quickly finalize the development project proposal with a view to implement the urban healthcare framework, the State Minister said that a people friendly and inclusive urban healthcare framework system will be developed through this and that will be able to provide proper services to the country for the next 20 to 30 years.
The program was moderated by the country Director of IPASS Bangladesh and convener of the CSO Forum Dr. Sayed Rubaiyat. Health Education Secretary AKM Benjamin Riazi and Family Planning DG Zeenat Rehana were also spoke at the event.
