BCIC Chairman inspects fertilizer warehouses, assures adequate urea supply
Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) Chairman and Additional Secretary Dr. Mahmudur Rahman inspected BCIC fertilizer warehouses in Nilphamari, Mahendranagar in Lalmonirhat, and Kurigram districts on Monday.
During the inspection, Dr. Rahman, in the presence of representatives of the local district administrations and Deputy Directors of the Department of Agricultural Extension, conducted sack-by-sack physical counting of the fertilizers stored in the warehouses and found the stock figures to be accurate.
He said the country’s demand for urea fertilizer can be met from the existing warehouse stocks through November 2026. In addition, three local fertilizer factories are currently producing around 5,000 metric tonnes of urea per day, while urea imports from abroad are also ongoing. These supplies, he said, will help meet fertilizer demand during the upcoming peak season.
The BCIC chairman urged farmers and other stakeholders not to panic over rumors or misleading information, stressing that the country has adequate stocks of urea fertilizer.
After the inspection, Dr. Rahman attended an exchange-of-views meeting at the conference room of the Kurigram Deputy Commissioner with the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Deputy Director of Agricultural Extension, all Upazila Nirbahi Officers, agriculture officers, leaders of the Bangladesh Fertilizer Association (BFA), and fertilizer dealers.
At the meeting, the BCIC chairman reiterated that sufficient stocks of urea fertilizer are available across the country. He said fertilizers are being supplied to dealers on time from BCIC factories and buffer warehouses according to demand.
He called on the local administration to strengthen monitoring to prevent any vested group from creating an artificial fertilizer shortage, increasing fertilizer prices, or spreading misinformation and rumors at the local level.
To ensure smooth distribution of fertilizer to farmers through dealers, one Tag Officer has been appointed at each BCIC factory and buffer warehouse. Fertilizer distribution from the warehouses is continuing seven days a week, including Fridays and Saturdays, and the process is being regularly monitored centrally by BCIC.
During the inspection, BCIC Director (Planning and Implementation) Md. Khairuzzaman and Senior General Manager (Marketing) Md. Manzur Reza were also present.
